Communities
Communities is a chat room for each company, inside the job log. Open it with the Community button in the log header, next to Log and Metrics. Everyone appears under a random handle such as amber-lynx-07. Nobody sees your name, email or résumé.
Communities is rolling out gradually. If you don't see the Community button yet, it hasn't reached your install. You can also switch it off entirely in Settings → Community → Enable Community; with it off, jobwhat makes no Community network calls at all.
Joining
- From your résumé. The first time you open Community, jobwhat lists the companies on your active résumé (your current employer and your Workday work history). Pick which to join, choose whether to join quiet ones muted, accept the community guidelines, and press Join. Nothing is joined until you do. Only a company key, current-or-former, a tenure bucket and a one-way hash of the stint are sent — never names, titles, dates or locations.
- Auto-join. After that first step, new employers on your résumé are joined automatically (a toast tells you). Turn this off in Settings → Community → Auto-join communities for companies on my résumé to get suggestions instead. A community you left is never re-joined automatically.
- Discover. Search any company, or browse From your job log, Trending and New. Join as a Candidate from the side panel. The Employee and Former roles are offered only for companies on your résumé.
- Create. If a company has no community yet, Create & join makes one. New communities stay out of search until they have 3 members.
Badges and roles
| Badge | Who | Can post in employee-only channels |
|---|---|---|
| Employee ✓ | The company is your current employer on your résumé | Yes |
| Former ✓ | A past employer on your résumé (last 10 years) | Yes |
| Candidate | Anyone else who joined | Read, react and follow only |
| Mod | Appointed moderator | Yes |
| New | Members in their first week | Per role |
The ✓ means on their résumé (self-attested), not verified by the employer. In communities with fewer than 10 current employees, Employee and Former both show as Employee/Former ✓ so a small group can't be told apart. If a company leaves your résumé, your badge drops to Candidate after 30 days.
Channels
Every company community starts with #general, #hiring-and-layoffs, #benefits (employees and formers only), #compensation, #interviews, #referrals and #announcements (moderators only). Channels with unread messages are bold with a count; right-click a channel to mute it.
Messages
- Formatting: bold, italic, strike, inline code, code blocks, quotes and lists. Links must be
https. No images or raw HTML. - Threads: reply in the side panel, optionally also sending the reply to the channel.
- Reactions: 👍 ❤️ 😂 🎉 😮 😢 🙏 👀.
- Mentions:
@handleand#channel. - Edit within 24 hours (shown as edited) and delete (leaves a message deleted marker).
- Polls: 2–6 options. Voters are anonymous and results appear only after 5 votes.
- Layoff reports and hiring signals in #hiring-and-layoffs. A layoff report shows Unverified until three employees or formers confirm it, or a moderator links a public source. Never name affected people.
- Referral requests in #referrals: role, a public job link, your log status and a short pitch. One open request per company; requests close after 21 days. Your résumé is shared only if you choose to after a referrer accepts.
- Search within a community: the last 90 days on Free, everything on Pro.
Safety checks before you post
As you type, the composer highlights anything that looks like an email, phone number, street address, employee ID, social-profile link or internal hostname, plus possible names of private people. Remove highlighted strips them. Hard categories (contact details, IDs) disable Send; you can Post for review instead, which sends it to moderators. jobwhat's server runs the same checks again, and an AI moderation check looks for identifying private people, threats, harassment, confidential material, spam and unverified accusations. Depending on the result a post is published, held for review (only you see it, marked Held for review), or rejected.
Limits and slow mode
New members post up to 20 messages a day, one every 30 seconds, and can't post links; limits rise after a week and again after a month without strikes. Moderators can turn on slow mode for a channel (you'll see a countdown in the composer), and very busy communities slow down automatically. If the service is under strain the community turns read-only for a few minutes and your draft is kept.
Reporting, blocking and moderation
- Report any message from its ⋯ menu: personal info, harassment, confidential info, false or defamatory, spam, or other. Enough reports hide the message pending review.
- Block a handle to hide their posts, reactions and messages everywhere you share a community. They aren't told. Unblock from Settings → Community.
- Moderators see a queue of held, reported and appealed posts and can approve, remove, strike, mute or ban. They see handles, trust level and strike history — never identities. Strikes: a warning, then a 24-hour mute, then a 7-day ban.
- Appeals: one per action, within 14 days, reviewed by a different moderator.
Handles and privacy
Your handle is generated, not chosen, so real names can't leak through it. You can reroll it up to 3 times when you join. By default you get a different handle in each community so they can't be linked; Use the same handle in every community is opt-in and makes you easier to identify. Moderators and jobwhat staff can tell that two handles share an owner (to stop ban evasion) but can't see who you are.
Direct messages, where enabled, start as a request the other person can accept, decline or block. They aren't end-to-end encrypted; moderators see a DM only if one of you reports it. Choose who can message you in Settings → Community → Who can message me.
Settings
See Settings → Community. Delete all my community data removes your memberships, handles, messages, reactions and DMs from every community (content is purged within 30 days, except anything under a legal hold).
